Supporting people with dementia and their families.
Age UK Medway offer a service which is designed to enable individuals who are experiencing the early stages of a dementia type illness to be supported in the community. Trained support workers will spend between one and two hours with each person on a weekly or fortnightly basis with the aim to pursue their interests, take part in meaningful activities, maintain their independence, retaining and or developing social contacts.
Our ethos is to understand the person with dementia and allow them to be themselves in a safe, non-medical, and stimulating environment. By allowing a person to remain at home longer, enabling them to retain daily living skills and independence and by giving them a sense of achievement and purpose, disruptive or challenging behaviour can be alleviated. The service helps to reduce social isolation and retain or regain links with their local community and can give the carer some valuable respite time.
The service is for people aged 55 plus and living in the Medway area. Referrals can be made by yourself, family or any Health and Social Care Professional. If you would like more information about this service please call 01634 401099.
